In case you missed it.
TSR/WotC has never had a great deal of success with ancillary games connected to the Dungeons and Dragons line. Let’s face it, The Great Khan Game didn’t exactly do gangbusters, and neither did Dragon Dice. Even Spellfire died out pretty quickly, though that was mainly due to mismanagement.
With the success of Three Dragon Ante, Wizards of the Coast has been making some interesting moves in terms of the Dungeons and Dragons product line. Rumor has it that they will be publishing a dice “tavern” game next. What’s cool is that they’re leading up to this on the Wizards’ site: Dice Games: Copper Dragon. They’ve got a bunch of cool dice game concepts up there already.
Dude, I don’t think I’m doing this right
So, I went off yesterday on my other blog about the first amendment, it seems only fitting that I should look at the bill of rights here, too. Look at this.
So, I’ve been defending D&D for years against the well-intentioned but poorly-informed evangelical criticisms. Turns out I’ve been wrong. Dungeons and Dragons is an integral part of Wicca, apparently. I must not have been doing this D&D thing right…
How could I have missed THIS?
From the D&D 3.5 FAQ, updated 2/22/07:
“Can a character belong to more than one “team” for the purpose of gaining teamwork benefits (Player’s Handbook II, 157)?
No, otherwise the limit of one teamwork benefit per 4 HD of the lowest-level member of the team would be meaningless.”
See, this bugs me. As I’ve said before, I LOVE teamwork benefits from a role-playing perspective. They’re not overpowered by any means, but they do give characters a reason to train together and whatnot. This sort of nerfs it, making it a one-time thing.
Yet psionics lives.
Why Don’t I like Eberron?
In some ways, it sucks to be me.
For years, D&D has been mainly divided up into two different product lines: Dungeons and Dragons, and the Forgotten Realms. As a lover of Realmslore, I could pick up a WotC product at any time and be, at least in terms of setting, pretty happy.
Eberron changed all that. Eberron is now the “third arm” of WotC publishing (forget Miniatures for a moment).
So, why can’t I seem to get into Eberron? The reasons I’ve always held up are as follows:
- The initial marketing Blitz at Gencon ‘04 was WAY over the top. (This is true, but maybe it’s time to let bygones be byegones. No point here).
- There’s too much of a “tech” component. (This is coming from the guy who owns, and enjoys, both the World of Warcraft d20 game as well as something called Dragonmech. Here again, no point).
- There’s too much magic. (Can anyone say “Realms”? No point again).
- Um, the blitz thing… again…maybe? Screw it.
I dunno. Maybe I better give it a try. It can’t hurt, right?
I’m a helper!
Well, I think the hobby has finally made the big time of geekdom. We’ve entered the 90s.
To be sure, there are some (not all, of course, but an occasionally vocal minority) among the online MMORPG crowd that snicker at us pen-and-paper Dungeons and Dragons players. What a backwards way to play a game - with pencils, dice, and at a kitchen table no less!
Add to that the fact that, as I mentioned in yesterday’s post, WotC still has no good replacement for E-Tools, and none on the horizon.
Well, we’ve arrived. All the base, as they say, are belong to us. We’ve got a software tool to help us play pen-and-paper D&D that even includes Engrish instructions: D&D Helper.
For those without enough finger strength to click, here’s an excerpt:
If you are a DM, then you know that there are several tables, charts, and other things that you need to look up from time to time. Many dice get rolled when you use a breath weapon. Experience for the party makes you look up a few things on an annoying chart and you need to divide by the number of party members. Calculating how far you get in a day of travelling over different terrains.
Wow. That was awesome.
Winter Fantasy, um, er, DDXP is over and guess WHAT?
Some interesting tidbits from the guys at Dungeons and Dragons R&D. Among them:
- 2006 was the biggest Dungeons & Dragons year EVAR in terms of sales.
- A replacement for E-tools is not on their priority list.
- Minis is the new hotness (duh!)
- 2007 will see a new Tavern Brawl dice game (think 3-dragon ante).
- 2007 will also see a complete history of the realms, including a timeline.
- Releases through the end of 2008 are planned, and none of them include fourth edition Dungeons and Dragons.
Very interesting info from the boys over at WotC. There is some speculation out there, too, that we could see a “3.75″ version of Dungeons and Dragons in 2008 - with new core book releases, but with relatively minor changes, perhaps even less dramatic than 3.0 to 3.5. That wasn’t from the Dungeons and Dragons R&D guys, however.
