What makes a good Dungeon Master?
February 11, 2007 · Filed Under Dungeon Mastering, Dungeons and Dragons
While we’re on the subject, what do you all think makes a good Dungeon Master?
Here are the things that I like to see from the DM, when I am playing:
- A well-told story
- A well-crafted plot
- Enthusiasm
- The ability to fairly mediate personality issues among players
- Challenging encounters
- A strong grasp of the basic rules of the game
Beyond that, everything else, from my perspective as a player, falls into place. I’d rank them in that order, too, #1 being most important and going down from there.
What do you all think?

7. Diddles you after the game.
The things that make a DM really good in my opinion are as follows:
He/she has to :
be able to separate a player’s personal quirks from their character’s
present the story in a way that gives the players options but does
not require them to attempt to write the story for the DM.
be able to allow roleplaying of the personality aspects of the characters
without letting them idividually run the game (or take it over)
realize that it is a game for entertainment purposes,
and make it fun for ALL involved
not take any roleplaying of characters as personal insults
What makes a great DM?…hmmmm…someone who will run a DnD game so that I can play for a while ,but understands that I crave ultimate power and in the long run, I must be behind the Screen O’ POwer!
Actually, a lot of what mrboffo said rings true with me as well,…I like a chance to do something heroic and inspiring…I also want lots of chances to get into character and really role play my goody-two-shoes heroes….sorry, but I am the Paladin _man!
