My FAVORITE character - it’s not who you think.
Everyone’s got their favorite Dungeons and Dragons character. You know, the one that you keep rebuilding, that you play over and over again? The one whose personality still infects every character you’ve made since? The one who, let’s face it, kicked the most butt?
I’m not sure I’ve had one. You see, I’m a Dungeon Master most of the time. While this new shared-world co-DM thing that my buddy Randy and I are doing does give me the opportunity to play a character a couple of times a month, the fact of the matter is that I just haven’t done it that often. Sure, I’m enjoying playing Cirron the half-celestial fighter, but I can’t say he’s my favorite. I can’t say that the monk I played a few months ago in the one-shot we played was my favorite either (though, he was indeed “monk-tastic.”) The character I played the most, Boskan the wild elf Sorcerer, was fun to play, but was kind of wimpy. And, I played him for maybe three months. Can’t say I liked him enough to call him my favorite.
I’ve played on that side of the Dungeon Master’s screen maybe a dozen times in a decade, mostly in one-shots. I haven’t played a character in more than a few sessions in that time, either.
It’s interesting. I think that my favorite characters have been ones my players played. Apis was awesome to DM for. Especially when his Pick Pockets percent chance was still low. Bishop was fun, too, if only because it inspired me to think of reasons for him to have a harpoon. Angie’s current PC is, to me, more exciting than the one I’m playing. Go figure.
Anyways, just offering a perspective from this side of the screen. Maybe that’s why I am so keen on players’ developing their character’s background - I have to play vicariously through them.
