So,

I’m one of those annoying DMs who leaves it to the players to know the rules for their characters.  There are way too many supplements for me to keep track of all of the rules updates and special abilities of every prestige class.

Now, I know it might sound lazy, but the fact of the matter is that I’ve got a lot on my plate.  Between running my web site, writing freelance, and being a dad and husband, I don’t have the same amount of time that I did, say, ten years ago to keep up with new expansions.  Add to that the fact that my players really are a great bunch of guys and, for the most part, honest, and it’s a workable arrangement.

When it comes to some basic things, however, I should just know them.  Like, for example, when the evil cleric tries to command undead.  Which undead does he get to command?  Does he pick?  Is it based on proximity?  Is it based on Hit Dice?

Well, Saturday night, I was pretty sure it was proximity.  My players, 4 of the 5, disagreed with me.  Of course, my evil NPC cleric was trying to command the gorillion skeleton that the party’s necromancer had created.  He was closest to my evil NPC.  Anyways, those 4 players argued for several minutes about how it was Hit Dice based, not proximity.  I said, as I usually do, “I’m calling it this way for now.  I’m sorry if you don’t like it.  We’ll look it up later, and if I am wrong, I am wrong.”  Usually when this happens, I am wrong.

Not Saturday.  Saturday, I was right.  That never happens.  I’m guessing I should buy a lotto ticket tomorrow :)
